Steven McCarty

Secretary

Steven McCarty is a dedicated public servant, community advocate, and champion for accountability in government. His passion for building stronger neighborhoods and ensuring government works for the people has made him a trusted leader in Washington, D.C. As Commissioner and Chair of ANC 2G, Steven has been a relentless advocate for more housing, safer streets, and improved city services, always putting his constituents first.

Steven’s commitment to public service is deeply personal. Raised in a union household in Southeast Michigan, he understands the power of collective action and the importance of standing up for working people. He has fought to expand housing opportunities, increase transparency in government, and bring the community together through meaningful engagement. His leadership has led to real, tangible progress—from securing critical infrastructure improvements to successfully advocating for policies that make neighborhoods safer and more livable.

A fierce advocate for youth, mental health, and the LGBTQ+ community, Steven has worked to create more inclusive and affirming spaces for young people. As President of the Kiwanis Club of Washington, D.C., he partnered with SMYAL to launch their Clinical Services Department, which provides free, affirming, and inclusive mental health care for queer and trans youth in Washington, D.C. His leadership in this effort earned him recognition as the 2022 SMYAL Youth Champion. He continues to champion policies that support young people, particularly those navigating issues of identity, mental health, and access to essential services.

Beyond his role as Commissioner, Steven is a national leader in grassroots organizing. As Director of Partnerships at Universe, he equips campaigns, candidates, and activists with the tools they need to mobilize and win. His expertise in voter engagement and local organizing has helped power progressive victories across the country.

Steven’s work is driven by the belief that change happens when people come together. Whether he’s fighting for better city services, strengthening democratic institutions, or mentoring the next generation of leaders, he is committed to building a future where every young person, every LGBTQ+ individual, and every community has a voice and a seat at the table.
